What is the Yellowstone prequel 1883 about?
1883 follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. According to Paramount+, it is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land — Montana. In the first clip released, an unknown voice that we can now assume is Sam Elliott says, “I don’t care if you live or die. But should you live… you tell them about me.” What we also know is this spin-off series will be an origin story for the Dutton clan and how they left their lives back in Texas to journey west and settle in Montana. In the present day, the Duttons own the largest contiguous ranch in the United States so we can speculate the show will touch upon how they were able to procure all that land. “We are thrilled to have Academy Award nominee and acting legend Sam and hugely talented, award-winning artists Faith and Tim all join the Taylor Sheridan universe,” David Glasser, CEO of 101 Studios, said in a release. “Taylor’s proven his immense capability of creating captivating characters and immersive worlds and there’s no exception here with 1883 and Sam, Faith and Tim’s characters. We are looking forward to this further expansion of the world of Yellowstone and bringing it to audiences everywhere.”

Will Yellowstone cast appear in 1883?
It’s unclear if any of the current cast of Yellowstone will appear as their own ancestors or other characters in 1883 but wouldn’t it be fun to see Kevin Costner take a turn as a Dances With Wolves-John Dunbar-esque type character? Or see Kelly Reilly playing a demure, genteel version of Beth in the wilds of 19th century Montana? While the original cast of Yellowstone may pop in for a cameo or guest starring role, it’s unlikely they will do double duty on both the original series and the spin-off.
Billy Bob Thornton will guest star on 1883
In a series shrouded in mystery, here’s what we know so far about Billy Bob Thornton’s appearance in the Yellowstone origin story, 1883: He will guest star as Marshal Jim Courtright. What part does the marshal play? How many episodes will he be in? How does he interact with Sam Elliott or country superstars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill? Paramount is keeping those details close to the vest. What we do know about Thornton’s character is Marshal Jim Courtright was a real lawman. The real Courtright appears to be a bit of a corrupt lawman, reportedly having coerced local business owners to pay protection money to him. Courtright died in a gunfight in 1887.
