In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Reynolds and McElhenney discussed the show, which premiered on FX on Wednesday, August 24, and documents their work to turn around one of the oldest soccer clubs in the world, which they purchased in February of 2021. The two emphasized the storytelling aspect of not only soccer but sports in general at multiple points during the interview—something that makes sense when you look at their backgrounds. “So much of it is built around hope, and it’s infused with joy, I mean, heartbreak,” Reynolds explained. “There’s an incredible tension to this kind of storytelling.” He went on to add, “It lives and dies with context. So understanding which players are there and how they got there and what it means to them to be there is everything. When I’m watching an NFL game and learning about a player that, you know, came from unbelievable adversity and overcame all these challenges to become the player that they are now, I mean, that’s so much of what draws us to the game.” Of course, he sees that in his new team, too. McElhenney ultimately agreed, but pointed out feelings of exclusion that would-be sports fans may feel trying to get involved. “There’s an unfortunate barrier of entry that I think a lot of people have to watching sports or enjoying sports,” he said. “Any sports fan realizes that it’s not really about the sport itself, it’s about the story, and it’s about the relationship that you have to the people who you’re watching it with and experiencing it with.” With Welcome To Wrexham, McElhenney hopes to open the gates on some of those barriers. “Fandom, in general, is open to everybody and anybody, whether you think you’re into sports or not,” he said. So if you’ve been hesitant to explore your curiosity when it comes to sports, let this be your sign. Take it from these two newbies and just enjoy the story.  More News:
