Executive producer Nigel Marchant said in a statement, “With such a loyal fanbase, we’re excited to give viewers a chance to follow Uhtred on the next stage of his epic quest, where not everyone survives.” The series’ star, Alexander Dreymon, said, “Playing Uhtred for five seasons has been a wonderful journey.” Indeed: Uhtred is in constant conflict between his ancestors, the Saxons, and the Vikings who raised him since he was a child, and the war between the kingdoms is echoed in his internal battles between his bloodline and who his family really proves to be. Dreymon will direct episodes in the fifth season of the series, which will also see the additions of Patrick Robinson as Father Benedict, “a holy man with a troubled past” and Sonya Cassidy as Eadgifu, “a smart and openhearted Saxon who arrives in Winchester.” Season 5 will focus on Uhtred training King Edward’s son, Aethelstan, in the art of war. It won’t be easy, per Deadline, which reports that Uhtred will “have to face down his greatest enemy and suffer his greatest loss.” Season 5 will be 10 episodes long, which should be plenty of time to show some drama and action between the Saxons and the Vikings. The Last Kingdom began on BBC Two before Netflix secured it in 2018.

Is there a Season 5 of The Last Kingdom?

Good news for fans: There will, in fact, be a Season 5 of The Last Kingdom.

Is The Last Kingdom based on a true story?

The Last Kingdom isn’t based in history, but in historical fiction: The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell. The upcoming fifth and final season is based on the ninth and tenth books in the series, but if history serves, the TV show will likely divert from the plot of the novels quite a bit. Some parts of the show were inspired by true events, including Uhtred himself, who is named after Uhtred the Bold. Cornwell has said that he’s actually a descendant of the real Uhtred.
