From the spoilers to the new cast members to the OGs who are coming back for more, here is everything we know about the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That…

When is the Sex and the City reboot coming out?

And Just Like That… debuted with two episodes on Thursday, Dec. 9. The following eight episodes will premiere weekly on subsequent Thursdays.

Who’s in the cast of the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That…?

Most of the original SATC OGs are back for the reboot, which offers a “where are they now” status update on our favorite characters. But there’s one notable and well-publicized exception: Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) will not be in AJLT. Cattrall and Parker have allegedly had a difficult relationship over the years; and Cattrall decided not to be in a third Sex and the City movie, which subsequently never happened. How is Samantha’s absence explained? Charlotte says ominously in the opening scene, “she’s no longer with us,” which is quickly followed by the explanation that Samantha moved to London for work. Meanwhile, here’s who is returning from the original Sex and the City cast for And Just Like That…

Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw

Carrie Bradshaw, a writer and the center of the series, chronicled her and her friends’ love lives on the original SATC. She since became a successful author of several books as the franchise progressed through two feature films. As for Parker, in real life, she’s launched a successful fashion and shoe line, a production company and starred in the HBO series Divorce. “I think young women still really relate to this story,” Parker told Vogue about AJLT. “It’s about finding friendships that matter, looking for work that fulfills you, and pursuing love, even when it drags you, bloodied, down the street.”

Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes

Miranda Hobbes is an attorney who revealed in the opening AJLT scene that she’s going back to school to get her masters in human rights so she can combine that with her law degree to help women in need. She’s also married with a teenage son. (Yep, Brady’s all grown up!). In real life, Nixon revealed on Instagram that she also directed an episode of the series. “I am thrilled to share that I am directing an episode of @JustLikeThatMax this season,” she wrote. “It’s been a complete dream to work with my beloved co-stars and crew in this new role. I have truly never felt so supported in my life. (And don’t worry, Miranda is still going to be in the episode—it was surreal to do both at once!)”

Kristin Davis as Charlotte York Goldenblatt

Charlotte York Goldenblatt has two children, Lily and Rose, and had the most motherhood-focused storylines on SATC—and AJLT continues that, with Charlotte’s focus on her daughter Lily’s music program, and her befriending another mom she meets on the parent school board (Nicole Ari Parker). “It as easy in some ways, in that obviously I know the character very well,” Davis toldET about returning to the role.

Chris Noth as Big

John James Preston, a.k.a. Mr Big, returns as Carrie’s husband. Noth didn’t love the Sex and the City movies, particularly the second’s plot line, which had Carrie kissing her old flame Aidan (John Corbett). “I was a little uncomfortable with the, um, in the second one, how the issues between Carrie and Big were resolved,” he toldThe Guardian. But he added that he and writer/producer Michael Patrick King “came up with a way for me to work into it,” for AJLT.

Aidan Shaw as John Corbett

Speaking of Aidan, Corbett says viewers will see Carrie’s ex once again in AJLT—although exactly how is still unclear. “I’m going to do the show,” he toldPage Six, saying it was “very exciting” and that “I think I might be in quite a few” episodes. However, his appearance wasn’t confirmed by HBO Max in their cast announcements.

Stanford Blatch as Willie Garson

Carrie’s best guy friend, Stanford, was always there for her, and will be in AJLT as well—however, his role in the series was cut short when Garson died from pancreatic cancer amid shooting in September. His character, though, will not meet the same fate, as his death wasn’t written into the script. Why? “Because it wasn’t charming,” King toldThe New York Times. “And I knew that the audience would know.”

Anthony Marentino as Mario Cantone

Stanford’s husband, wedding planner-turned-bread baker (yep!) Anthony Marentino, will be back as well. On-set photos taken before AJLT’s premiere confirmed his character’s career switch; in pics, he sports an apron with the catering logo “Hot Fellas.”

Natasha as Bridget Moynahan

Big’s ex-wife Natasha, who he cheated on with Carrie, will also appear in AJLT, although we don’t yet know in what capacity. However, she was seen filming a scene with Parker, and of course, those two characters must have much to discuss. “I am so happy they asked me to come back,” she told ET. “And it was so fun. It was like going back to a family.”

Steve Brady as David Eigenberg

Miranda’s laid-back husband, Steve, will be back as well. The couple lives together in Brooklyn with their son, Brady. “I really love that show. I think it’s really interesting that they’ve brought it back,” he toldUs Weekly before production started. “[Nixon is] a dream to work with.” Aww!

Harry Goldenblatt as Evan Handler

Charlotte’s husband, divorce lawyer Harry Goldenblatt, appears in AJLT as well. Although in the last SATC movie, Charlotte was worried about their attractive nanny (who turned out to be a lesbian anyway), this duo’s marriage now appears very stable as they raise their two daughters, Lily and Rose.

Who’s new in the cast of the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That…?

Recognizing the fact that friendships change—as well as rectifying the show’s originally very white casting—there are also many new faces this time around. “It was a show that was based on material that was very much of its time,” Parker toldThe New York Times of SATC’s original lack of diverse casting. In rectifying that, “they understand that one Black friend is not going to cut it,” Nicole Ari Parker, who plays one of four new characters of color, told the outlet. Here’s a who’s-who of who’s new.

Sara Ramirez as Che Diaz

Che Diaz is a non-binary, queer stand-up comedian and podcast host, who features Carrie Bradshaw on their show; the character of Che, as well as Ramirez in real life, both use they/them pronouns. Grey’s Anatomy fans will remember Ramirez as Dr. Callie Torres. “What I really love about Che is that they are unapologetically themselves,” Ramirez toldThe Hollywood Reporter.

Nicole Ari Parker as Lisa Todd Wexley

Chicago PD and Empire’s Nicole Ari Parker plays documentary filmmaker and humanitarian Lisa Todd Wexley, otherwise known as LTW, who’s on the parent board with Charlotte at their daughters’ school. While Charlotte, Carrie and Miranda all clearly have friend crushes on LTW, Parker insists her character’s not “replacing” Samantha. “Everybody thought there was only one new character and it was replacing Samantha,” she toldGlamour. “But Samantha’s not replaceable… Now everyone’s excited to see what the new characters are doing.”

Sarita Choudhury as Seema Patel

Seema Patel is a single real estate broker, played by British actress Sarita Choudhury, who also comes into the new circle of friends. “She’s a fancy lady—high powered, wears very expensive clothes, has a very strong New York but maybe European flair,” Choudhury toldThe New York Post. “She navigates the world at ease. Seema speaks her mind—so even if there is a contentious moment, it’s revolved in five minutes.”

Karen Pittman as Dr. Nya Wallace

A Columbia law professor, Dr. Nya Wallace is also, like fellow attorney Miranda, married and living in Brooklyn. “I would say that her way into the story is through her friendship with Miranda,” Pittman, who’s also appeared on Yellowstone and The Morning Show, toldThe New York Post.

Cathy Ang as Lily York Goldenblatt

Up-and-coming actress Cathy Ang (the voice of Fei Fei in Netflix’s animated film Over the Moon) plays Charlotte and Harry’s daughter Lily, an aspiring concert pianist. “Sarah Jessica Parker—she’ll help you,” she toldCosmopolitan of filming. “I was making some mistakes when we were first working and, like, she’ll help you.”

Niall Cunningham as Brady Hobbes

Brady is also now a teenager and played by Life in Pieces actor Niall Cunningham. In AJLT’s opening scene, Miranda reveals the pitfalls of life with a sexually active teen: Sometimes you step on a used condom on his bedroom floor (gross!).

John Tenney as Carrie’s new mystery man

Even if Carrie doesn’t kiss Aidan again, we know she’ll still kiss another man on AJLT played by Jon Tenney (TNT’s The Closer), whose character hasn’t yet been announced. The duo was seem filming outside Carrie’s brownstone in Manhattan earlier this year.

Is there a trailer for the Sex and the City reboot?

Get ready to get Carried away because HBO Max has released the official trailer! “The more I live, the more I find that if you have good friends in your corner, anything’s possible,” Parker’s character says in the clip, which shows Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte, along with other familiar and new faces, hitting the streets of New York City. The trailer concludes with Carrie saying, “And just like that, after all the years and all the changes, you’re still you.” The official trailer arrived a few weeks after a teaser was released on Nov. 12. In that 50-second clip, Carrie is heard saying, “They say some things never change… but the truth is, life is full of surprises. And as your story unfolds, the city reinvents itself. And just like that, a new chapter begins.”

Why isn’t Kim Cattrall returning for the Sex and the City revival?

Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha Jones in the original TV series, has been vocal in the past about not wanting to reprise her role—so it wasn’t a total surprise when SATC fans learned that their favorite sexpot wouldn’t be a part of AJLT. “I’m lucky enough to have choice, not that I haven’t worked for it, but I have it,” she said (via Entertainment Tonight) on the Women’s Prize for Fiction podcast in 2020. “It’s something I feel very lucky to have and I’m very protective of it. I wouldn’t be any good doing something that I really didn’t want to do.” In 2021, HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys seemed to offer an explanation for Samantha’s absence, telling TVLine, “It is very much a story about women in their 50s, and they are dealing with things that people deal with in their 50s. Just as in real life, people come into your life, people leave,” Bloys added. “Friendships fade, and new friendships start. So I think it is all very indicative of the real stages, the actual stages of life… They’re trying to tell an honest story about being a woman in her 50s in New York. So it should all feel somewhat organic, and the friends that you have when you’re 30, you may not have when you’re 50.”

Who is playing Samantha in the Sex and the City revival?

When HBO Max announced a revival of SATC in early 2021 titled And Just Like That…, fans were worried that the return of Parker’s iconic character and some of her New York friends wouldn’t be the same without Samantha. We’ve since learned that the role of Samantha is not being recast after Cattrall’s exit, but there is a new character who will apparently be the newest member of Carrie’s girl squad. On Aug. 22, The Guardian reported that actress Nicole Ari Parker, known for her roles in everything from Empire to Boogie Nights, “will play Carrie Bradshaw’s new best friend, documentary-maker Lisa Todd Wexley.” (Wexley has also been described elsewhere as a “Park Avenue mother of three.”) Sarah Jessica Parker also seemed to make it known that Nicole’s character would be inner-circle when she shared a pic on Instagram of the two of them group-hugging with Nixon and Davis. “Oh so fine. I’d sing along to 70’s love songs with this trio deep into any night,” SJP wrote in the caption.

Was Willie Garson done shooting his role on And Just Like That…?

HBO Max has yet to address whether Garson had completed his filming commitments for AJLT before his Sept. 21 death. Us Weekly reported on Sept. 22 that Garson was seen on the show’s NYC set in August 2021, about one month before he passed away. The New York Times reported on Dec. 3 that Garson’s death was not written into the show. “Because it wasn’t charming,” showrunner Michael Patrick King said. “And I knew that the audience would know.”

Are there And Just Like That… spoilers?

In mid-October 2021, Parker and co-star Chris Noth (a.k.a. Mr. Big) were spotted shooting AJLT scenes in Paris—and not surprisingly, fans were thrilled by the news. Before that, in mid-July 2021, Page Six reported that (SPOILER ALERT!) according to a leaked portion of an AJLT script, Carrie and Big’s marriage might be on the rocks! “Now in her 50s and the host of a podcast, [Carrie] and Mr. Big appear to be over and fighting over finances in a plot familiar to many real-life Manhattan socialites,” the outlet claimed, adding that one of Parker’s lines as Carrie goes, “At least I felt good about my marriage. Now I’m just one of the wives he was taking care of?” However, they seem to be happily married in the trailer. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
