Britain’s longest-serving monarch—and the second-longest serving monarch in world history—passed away on Sept. 8, 2022, at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Palace staff members emerged from the London royal residence to officially announce her passing, as is tradition. Following a major event like a death or a birth, a notice is attached to the railings of Buckingham Palace to alert members of the public. They hung up a letter on the gates of the palace as crowds swelled and gathered to mourn and pay tribute to Her Majesty. The statement on the gates read: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral Palace this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.” Union flags have also been lowered to half-mast at Buckingham Palace and Downing Street following the announcement of the beloved monarch’s death. The queen’s doctors became concerned for her health on the morning of Sept. 8, when she pulled out of a virtual privy meeting. She remained under medical supervision as her four children—as well as her grandsons, Prince William and Prince Harry—gathered at Balmoral to be by her side.
