While the beloved Harry Potter books and films feature the famous “Sorting Hat” which ultimately decides whether each Hogwarts student belongs to Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin or Hufflepuff, a new report from USDish instead breaks down the four houses by U.S. states. To do this, they used a combination of Google Trends to analyze what houses are searched for the most in each state, as well as a survey completed by 1,000 people who had been sorted through the Wizarding World quiz. According to their findings, over half of the U.S. was sorted into Slytherin, which might be unsettling for those familiar with the Wizarding World. Slytherin is known for being the house of many dark witches and wizards, although the official Wizarding World website, Slytherins are “ambitious, shrewd and possibly destined for greatness.” 27 states were sorted into the Slytherin house, including Texas, Massachussetts, California, Maine and Florida. Also to the dismay of many fans, only three states (Utah, Michigan and Connecticut) were sorted into Gryffindor—the beloved house of bravery that Harry, Hermione and Ron all belong to. 16 states were sorted into Ravenclaw, the house of “braniacs,” including Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Oklahoma, New York and Pennsylvania. According to the report, no one thought their state belonged in Hufflepuff, but five states (Idaho, Wyoming, Kansas, Vermont and Arkansas) were still sorted there. The study also tested how people felt about their results, finding that “Americans overall agreed with the Hogwarts House Google Trends sorted their state into.” They also found that Gryffindor was “by far the Hogwarts House people were most proud of,” USDish reported, while 24% percent of survey takers would “prefer to be in a particular house because their favorite Harry Potter character resided there.” Check out this map to see where your state resides, or visit the Wizarding World website to get your personal Hogwarts House assignment.
