Karly Blackburn shared the story of how she sent her resume on a sheet cake to Nike’s Valiant Labs division on LinkedIn, and it went viral, with people sharing both positive and negative responses to the plan. Blackburn began the story by saying, “A couple of weeks ago I sent my resume on a cake to Nike. Yes, an edible resume on top of a cake.” She explained, “Nike was having a huge celebration for JDI day (Just Do It day). LeBron James, Colin Kaepernick + Other Megastars were at the event.” Blackburn thought this was the best time to get noticed by Valiant Labs, which she described as “a startup incubator for Nike ideas.” But see, there were some major obstacles to get through for her plan to be a success, with Blackburn wondering, “How could I get an edible resume on top of a cake delivered to a party (I wasn’t invited to), to THE team I wanted it to go to, from North Carolina all the way to Beaverton, Oregon.” Thanks to a local grocery store and a determined Instacart driver named Denise Baldwin, the cake was successfully delivered. It’s certainly an innovative way to get noticed, and many people had positive reactions to Blackburn’s story, with a person named Fasil Khan commenting, “Genius & awesome idea. I would hire you for the simple reason you think out the box, go getter, action taker & don’t care people think that’s a winner in my eyes!” Others noted that even if she didn’t get a call from Nike after this (though she did), “her efforts got over 83700 likes and 3500 comments on Linkedin. As a marketing professional, she already attracted enough attention online that well pays her cost of doing this stunt, whether Nike responds or not,” as Harvey Lin commented. Of course, every great idea is not without its detractors, such as one woman named Angela Tacker, who wrote in response to someone asking if Blackburn heard from Nike, “She won’t. No adult professional will respond to this.” Obviously, Tacker was wrong, and many people criticized her negativity and “presumptuous” attitude. All in all, it worked out very well for Blackburn, and on top of that, she inspired the amazing Instacart driver Baldwin to work towards getting a better job that fits her qualifications and talent. Hopefully one of the over 100,000 people who reacted to the post has a great offer for her! More News:
