Why did Oprah Winfrey interview Prince Harry and Meghan Markle?
Duchess Meghan revealed that she wasn’t previously allowed to speak to Winfrey in a press capacity without the palace’s approval, and the palace declined to go forward with a request from Winfrey from before Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding in 2018. Despite that, the U.K. tabloid media reported on the former Suits actress incessantly, and even when reports were false, “The Institution” wasn’t allowed to comment or refute anything. “We’re on the other side of a lot of life experience that’s happened and we have the ability to make our choices,” Meghan said of her choice to speak out now. “As an adult who lived a really independent life to then go into this construct that is, um, different than what I think people imagine it to be, it’s really liberating to have the right and the privilege in some ways to be able to say, ‘Yes, I’m ready to talk.’ To be able to make a choice on your own and just speak for yourself.” Meghan also expressed frustration at The Firm not defending her but allegedly lying to protect other members of the royal family. “It was only once we were married and everything sort of started to worsen that I realized I wasn’t being protected, but that they were willing to lie to protect other members of the family but not tell the truth to protect me and my husband,” she said. “I don’t know how [the palace] could expect that after all of this time we would still just be silent when there is an active role that the Firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us.” Next, find out all the biggest bombshells from Oprah Winfrey’s interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
