The Netflix hit is critically acclaimed and adored by audiences, thanks to its queer love story, not just between the main characters, but also their families and friends (especially Nick and his mom!). Of course, the love story between the leads is what drives the rest of the plot, and goodness gracious is it cute! Get a small taste below: Here’s everything we know so far about Heartstopper Season 2, but beware of Heartstopper Season 1 spoilers ahead!
Will there be a Heartstopper Season 2?
Heartstopper sets up Season 2 at the end of Season 1. The series is based on webcomics that have since been turned into graphic novels by Alice Oseman. Season 1 covered Volumes 1 and 2 of the books. There are currently four volumes of Heartstopper, with its fifth (and so far final) volume being set for a 2023 release. At the conclusion of Heartstopper Season 1, Nick and Charlie hold hands in front of their entire school and officially become a couple—and Nick takes the plunge and comes out to his mother as bisexual. On May 20, 2022, Netflix announced that Heartstopper would be renewed for two more seasons, tweeting, “To those who have fallen in love with Nick & Charlie, cried watching Alice Oseman’s magical story brought to life, or felt represented for the first time on-screen, I am elated to announce… Heartstopper has been renewed for TWO MORE SEASONS!” “I hope that it just makes people smile and brightens their day," creator Oseman told Tudum. “But I also hope that it inspires, particularly, young queer people to believe that they can find happiness and find romance and find friendship.” Exectuive producer Patrick Walters said in a statement, “We put so much love into the making of Heartstopper so to reassemble the team for two more seasons is a dream come true. I’m forever grateful to Alice Oseman for entrusting us with this beautiful, unique story that at its core seeks to uplift the next generation of young LGBTQ+ people. Stay tuned!”
When is the Heartstopper Season 2 release date?
A release date has yet to be announced for Heartstopper Season 2, but based on critical acclaim and audience reactions, it’s likely that we’ll see at least one more installment of the sweeter-than-sugar series. Joe Locke, who stars as Charlie Spring, told Entertainment Weekly, “I think it’s quite easy to look ahead at a second season because of Volumes 3 and 4 of the novels. Charlie develops an eating disorder and his mental health takes a turn for the worse and I think that would be interesting to look into, especially if the show continues to be very much a teen show.” He added, “Whenever people tackle mental health on TV, it tends to be really dark and I think what our show has really done well so far is tackling issues, but from an optimistic lens. You can always see the light at the end of the tunnel, you always know it’s going to get better. I think it’d be really great to look at that more.”
When is Heartstopper Season 2?
No Heartstopper Season 2 release date has yet been set. That said, since Season 1 dropped on April 22, 2022, it’s safe to assume that barring any delays, Season 2 will likely come out around the same time next year. On Sept. 22, 2022, it was revealed that Heartstopper Season 2 is officially in production, so that timeline tracks so far!

Who is Elle in Heartstopper?
Yasmin Finney plays Elle, a classmate of Nick and Charlie’s, in Heartstopper. In the show, Elle, a trans Black girl, transfers to the Harvey Greene Grammar School for Girls. Finney told Teen Vogue of her experience playing the character, “I’ve learned so much by being Elle … Me and Elle are very, very similar. Even when it comes to our social life, when it comes to our school life, when it comes to our experience in high school. You know, it says in the series that she nearly got expelled because of her hair length, and I also nearly got expelled because of my hair length. And there’s just so many things that Elle has taught me through filming.” Finney says that she learned to be “unapologetically [herself]” from playing Elle, but one of the best parts of working on the show is what is left unsaid. “The fact that it doesn’t even mention that she’s trans in the series just really kind of shocked me and just gave me so much hope in the industry because it goes to show that we don’t really have to focus on the sad stuff and the bad stuff of being a trans person,” Finney said. “We can really now just focus on the positive and the beautiful side of it.”
Is Olivia Colman in Heartstopper?
Oscar-winner Olivia Colman plays Nick’s mother, Sarah Nelson, in Heartstopper—and she was a dream casting that came true for Oseman and producer Patrick Walters. “It was always the dream. I was talking to Alice and suggested Oliva Colman to play Nick’s mum and it felt like a total fantasy,” Walters told Metro. “‘That would be brilliant but that’s incredibly unlikely.’ So we only sent the part to her and she said yes! … I thought there was no way she would want to be a part of this or anyone famous would want to be a part of this. I was proven wrong!” Walters revealed that Colman was so moved by one particular scene that she burst into tears. “In their scene when he’s coming out to her in the rehearsal, she was just looking at Kit and his performance was so moving she just burst into tears and forgot her lines. It was a kind of amazing dream,” Walters recalled. “In being there with her on those days, she seemed to really respond to Kit and what he was doing in those scenes and to feel like the open communication between a mother and a son of that age, she said that was really lovely and nice to play.”
