Greg Dietzenbach is one handy man. The father of two has a history of producing creative, homemade costumes for his kids, but this Halloween, according to an interview with NBC New York, Dietzenbach’s kids didn’t need his help for their costumes, so, instead, he came up with plans for a little home improvement. The family had been wanting to replace their front door, so he set out to give the space a little makeover before replacing the old one—turning their entryway into a living, though maybe not breathing, “Monst-Door.” With grumpy, blinking eyes, a toothy mouth, a grouchy voice and reaching arms, the new addition is guaranteed to startle any trick-or-treaters that happen to stop by. In an online blog, the creator explained that he started with “lots and lots of sketches,” as he does whenever he starts a new project. He knew the vision he had wouldn’t work with a pre-existing door, so he built the incredible contraption from scratch. The exterior was simple enough, but behind the door he described “all sorts of complexities,” including an old television screen displaying a custom video of angry eyes and a guillotine-like contraption that drops down the panels to reveal them. According to NBC, the project took about 10 days, and the mouth is tied to Dietzenbach’s foot, allowing him to control the lips by kicking backward, though it’s not clear if that also triggers the eyes and the arms. The publication describes him as “a one-man-band puppeteer behind the door.” Cool as it is, there are a couple of drawbacks to the design: He can’t see anyone’s reaction, so he has to watch them back with his cameras after the fact, and the door no longer functions, meaning he has to climb in through the window or go around the back. But hey, if graphic design doesn’t work out in the long run, there’s definitely potential here to create the next number-one haunted attraction in the country.
