When NBC News’ Savannah Sellers questioned Sorokin on her whether or not she thought defrauding the banks was wrong, she responded, “That was definitely unethical, yes, and I would not encourage anyone else to follow [in] my footsteps.” In the new interview, Sellers quickly asked Sorokin if she thinks she should apologize to anyone affected by her actions. Sorokin replied, “You mean, for what? I’m not a 12-year-old kid, to apologize.” Sellers clarified that she was specifically asking in regards to her fraud with the banks, to which Sorokin stated, “I don’t think [the banks] care.” The rest of the interview touched on a variety of topics, like Sorokin’s constant stays in expensive hotels that she didn’t pay for, her relationship with Rachel Williams, a woman who Sorokin left with a $62,000 hotel bill in Marrakesh, and the public’s perception of her. Addressing the hotel stays, Sorokin claimed that “Staying in a hotel made sense for me because I was traveling so much. I was not staying like in a biggest penthouse. I was just staying like in a regular room.” Sorokin also said that she didn’t preemptively plan to commit fraud against Williams. Along with that, Sorokin shared that she doesn’t agree with the public’s depiction of her, whether in the news or the Netflix miniseries, Inventing Anna, where she’s portrayed by Julia Garner. Trying to explain herself, she said, “I never really had any malicious intent. And I’m not just like this vicious scamming person trying to take advantage of anybody who’s just like stupid enough to fall for it.” Even after all of this, Sorokin is still exploring business ventures, and her newest endeavor is a line of NFTs called Reinventing Anna, which would allow purchasers to meet Sorokin, either through a phone call or in-person meeting. Talking to Sellers about her future plans, Sorokin shared, “I’d love to be given an opportunity for people not to just dismiss me as like a quote-unquote scammer and just see what I’m going to do next." Sellers interviewed Sorokin via video call, as Sorokin is detained in an ICE detention center hoping to avoid deportation. In 2019, Sorokin was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison after being convicted of theft of services charges and grand larceny. She is currently appealing the decision.
